Our anaesthetists
Our anaesthetists are members of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists and fellows of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. They are active participants in the College’s continuing professional development program.
Dr Matthew Matusik

Matthew is a specialist anaesthetist with a public hospital post at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne and a private practice working at multiple hospitals around Melbourne with a special interest in anaesthesia for in ear, nose and throat surgery and orthopaedic surgery. Matthew is a fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and a member of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists.
Matthew studied medicine at the University of Melbourne and undertook specialist training at St Vincent’s Hospital.
Dr Tuong D Phan

Dr Tuong Phan is a Specialist Anaesthetist working in Melbourne. His main public appointment is at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne where he is a senior staff specialist. In private, he has appointments at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Melbourne, Epworth Hospitals, and Cabrini Hospital.
He obtained his medical degree at the University of Melbourne where he is a senior honorary clinical lecturer. His anaesthetic training included 3 years in the UK before returning to St Vincent’s to obtain his ANZCA fellowship in 2009. His clinical areas of interest include cardiac anaesthesia, interventional cardiology, neuro-anaesthesia and regional anaesthesia. He has active professional activities that include Enhanced Recovery After Surgery and quality and safety programs relating to anaesthesia and perioperative care.
Dr Mark Suss

Mark is a specialist anaesthetist practising in Melbourne. Mark has a public hospital post at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital and a private practice with special interests in eye, ear, nose and throat surgery and gynaecology. Mark is a past state Chair of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists.
Mark studied medicine at the University of Melbourne, was a medical resident at the Alfred Hospital and undertook specialist anaesthetic training at Southern Health and at the Mercy Hospital for Women. He completed his training with a fellowship at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in 2008, focusing on cardiac anaesthesia and the use of ultrasound in anaesthesia.
Dr Will Watson
BMBS FRCA FANZCA
Will completed his initial postgraduate training in the South West of England, before moving over to Melbourne to work in Emergency Medicine for 2 years.
He relocated to Glasgow to pursue anaesthetic training, including subspecialty training in Intensive Care, and anaesthesia for ENT procedures. He completed this training in 2019, before returning to Melbourne to work at St Vincent’s as a regional anaesthesia fellow for a year.
He moved back to the UK during the COVID pandemic to work as a consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care medicine, before being appointed as a full time staff anaesthetist at St Vincent's Hospital in January 2022. He is currently the lead anaesthetist for Orthopaedics and Regional Anaesthesia (blocking nerves to help with pain after surgery).
He is heavily involved in teaching trainees, and was named department Teacher of the year for 2022. He also holds an appointment at Melbourne University as a clinical lecturer, and is currently undertaking several research projects at St Vincent's. Away from work he is a very amateur triathlete, soccer player and father to two young children.
Dr Suzi Nou

Suzi is a specialist anaesthetist with public appointments at the Northern Hospital and Royal Dental Hospital. She is Immediate Past President of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists and current Board member. Suzi trained in Melbourne and has undertaken advanced training in paediatrics at the Royal Children’s Hospital. She has extensive experience in providing and building paediatric surgical, ICU and retrieval services in parts of Asia and the Pacific. She has been the Director of the Department of Anaesthesia and ICU at Colonial War Memorial Hospital, Suva, Fiji and Senior Lecturer at the Fiji National University.
Her clinical interests are in paediatric anaesthesia, maxillofacial surgery, trauma and resuscitation. She enjoys teaching and has led various educational programs across many countries in the region. In her spare time, she hosts the “Australian Anaesthesia” podcast and makes YouTube videos to help people manage COVID at home.
She understands that whilst participating in surgery is an everyday event for her, it may be a one-in-a-lifetime event for you and that your safety is a priority.
Dr Aylin Seven

Dr Aylin Seven is an specialist adult and paediatric Anaesthetist, working full time in public practice with appointments at the Royal Children’s Hospital and Austin Hospital. She has been working in private anaesthetic practice mostly in paediatric anaesthesia in Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) and Dental work.
She has worked in Melbourne since 2020, and prior to her time at RCH and the Austin she has worked in Darwin, NT and Newcastle, NSW. She has also worked in some remote parts of Australia such as Nhulunbuy in East Arnhem Land. Her professional interests also include welfare and leadership, global health, teaching and simulation. She has been involved in overseas anaesthetic teaching projects in Namibia, Fiji and Samoa as well as teaching trainees and medical students here in Australia.
She is an accredited Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, a member of both the Australian Society of Anaesthetists (ASA) and Society of Paediatric Anaesthetists of New Zealand and Australia (SPANZA). Her other qualifications include Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery and a Masters of International Public Health.
Dr Myat Thant Aung

Myat is a specialist anaesthetist based in Melbourne, with his main public appointment at The Alfred Hospital. He also works at multiple private hospitals, with clinical interests in vascular surgery, Ear Nose and Throat (ENT), and orthopaedics.
He obtained his medical degree from Monash University in 2017 and completed his anaesthetic training at The Alfred, including a provisional fellowship year at the Royal Children's Hospital. He received his ANZCA fellowship in 2020. Subsequently, he spent two years as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and continues to serve as an Adjunct Assistant Professor. During his time overseas, he gained subspecialty experience in laryngology, vascular, and regional anesthesia.
His professional interests include critical incident debrief policy. He is a member of the Australian Society of Anaesthesia (ASA) and the current Victorian Economic Advisory Committee (EAC) representative.
Dr Damian SImpson

Damian is a specialist anaesthetist working in both public and private hospitals. He has a subspecialty interest in Paediatric Anaesthesia but provides anaesthetic services across a wide range of specialties including ENT, dental and orthopaedics.
Damian graduated from Auckland Medical School in 2002 and commenced anaesthetic training in 2004. He completed a paediatric anaesthesia fellowship at The Hospital for SIck Children, Toronto in 2009 and gained fellowship with Australian NZ College of Anaesthetists in 2010. For the past 14 years he has been working in both public and private practice in Auckland New Zealand but recently moved to Melbourne to take up public positions at St Vincents Public and Ballarat Base Hospital.
Dr Adam Skinner

Adam is an adult and paediatric anaesthetist; he has worked as a full time specialist at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne for over 10 years. His subspecialist interests include anaesthesia for congenital heart disease, paediatric liver transplantation and neuroanaesthesia. He works at multiple private hospitals with interests including anaesthesia for adult and paediatric orthopaedics, general surgery, neurosurgery, urology, plastic surgery and Ear, Nose and Throat surgery.
Adam qualified as a doctor at the University of Bristol, UK in 1994, before completing his postgraduate Royal College of Physician’s exams in adult general medicine. He gained his certificate in specialist anaesthesia training in 2004 having worked in UK and Melbourne.
He is the course convenor for the primary FANZCA course, which prepares trainee anaesthetists for their post-graduate professional exams. He has recently been the external examiner for the Malaysian final specialist Masters in anaesthesia and intensive care. He regularly teaches the multidisciplinary management of critical incidents and resuscitation using high fidelity simulated scenarios. He has recently completed the new Masters degree in Perioperative Medicine from Monash University. As lead clinician for the Pre-Admission clinic at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Adam has a significant interest in anxiety reduction before anaesthesia. He has completed a diploma in clinical hypnosis in Adelaide to help reduce perioperative stress. Adam is an honorary clinical lecturer at Melbourne University.
Dr Christine Vien
MBBS FANZCA GAICD
Christine is a full-time staff anaesthetist at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne. She completed fellowships in Regional Anaesthesia at St Vincent’s Hospital and Paediatric Anaesthesia at the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne. She continues to work in Paediatric Anaesthesia in private practice.
Christine also has a strong interest in medical management, having membered and chaired a number of committees at tertiary hospitals focusing on the welfare and training of junior doctors.
She was the New Fellows Councillor on the ANZCA Council in 2018-2020 and currently working towards her associate fellowship to the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators.
Dr Sarah Frayne

Sarah is a specialist anaesthetist working in Melbourne. She completed her medical degree at the University of Auckland, in New Zealand, and moved to Melbourne during her anaesthetics training. She completed fellowships at Monash Health, The Royal Melbourne Hospital and The Royal Women’s Hospital.
Alongside private work Sarah has a public appointment at Werribee Mercy Hospital. She has a special interest in obstetric anaesthesia and other interests include orthopaedic breast plastic and gynaecological surgery.
Outside clinical work, Sarah has an interest in hospital administration, having completed a postgraduate certificate in healthcare management.
Dr David Morgan
MBBS FANZCA MMed (Periop)
David is a specialist anaesthetist whose practice includes paediatric, adult and obstetric patients. His interests include dental, ENT, general, gynocological and upper GI obesity surgery. He has been an anaesthetist at the Royal Womens Hospital for 19 years. He also works in multiple private hospitals throughout Melbourne.
David graduated medical school at the University of Queensland in 1990. His anaesthetic training began in 1996 in Tasmania, followed by advanced training in Victoria. He gained his specialist qualification in 2002 in Melbourne.
David has completed a masters of perioperative medicine in 2017. He also has an interest in crisis management in anaesthesia, and will be completing the Emergency Management in Anaesthetic Crises instructors course in April. He also has an interest in anaesthetic audit with participation in twice yearly hospital anaesthetic audit.
Dr James Koziol

Dr James Koziol is a specialist anaesthetist practicing in Melbourne. He has subspecialty interests in paediatrics and cardiac surgery, although he is skilled in all anaesthetic services.
He currently has public appointments at both St Vincent’s Hospital and the Royal Children’s Hospital. He works privately at many centres in Melbourne, including Cabrini and St Vincent’s Private Hospitals.
James completed his medical degree through the University of Melbourne, and completed basic anaesthesia training through St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne. He has undertaken advanced training in paediatrics at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne and also at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. He has also undertaken a diploma in echocardiography and the use of ultrasound in anaesthesia.
